Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh Resigns as Punjab MLA, Dealing Another Blow to AAP
Punjab AAP faces another political setback as suspended MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh resigns from the Assembly. His decision follows the exit of two other party MLAs, raising fresh questions about the party's political position.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, who represents the Amritsar North Assembly constituency, announced his resignation on Monday through a post on Facebook. Sharing a copy of his resignation letter, he wrote, "I have resigned from the membership of the Punjab Legislative Assembly."
In his letter addressed to the Assembly Speaker, Singh stated that his resignation would take effect from November 1, 2026.
His decision comes a day after two other AAP MLAs, Chetan Singh Jouramajra from Samana and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanaur, resigned from the party's primary membership on Sunday. The consecutive developments have intensified political activity in Punjab.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh was suspended from AAP for five years in June last year over allegations of anti-party activities. The action followed his questioning of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau's action and the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia. Majithia had been arrested in a disproportionate assets case.
Singh had repeatedly criticised the Bhagwant Mann government over several issues. He had also expressed dissatisfaction with the government's handling of delays in delivering justice in the 2015 sacrilege and police firing cases.
The former IPS officer was part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that investigated the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan police firing cases. He had raised the 2015 sacrilege case several times in the Punjab Assembly.
He also questioned the functioning of the Bhagwant Mann government after more than 20 people died following the consumption of poisonous liquor in Amritsar last year.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2021 after taking voluntary retirement from the police service. He subsequently contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and won from the Amritsar North constituency.
His resignation from the Assembly comes amid the departure of multiple AAP legislators and marks another significant development in Punjab's political landscape.
